There is a pervasive movement afoot within business, government and organizations to apply “Plain Language” principles to communications materials. In essence, plain language requires the orderly and clear presentation of sometimes complex content. Writers in sync with the plain language concept are much better able to ensure their intended audience will understand and act after a single reading.
Plain language writers and editors analyze and determine what information readers need to make informed decisions; before considering words, sentences, or paragraphs. A plain language document uses words economically and at a level the reader can understand. Its sentence structure is tight. Its tone is welcoming and direct. Its design is visually appealing. A plain language document is easy to read and looks like it is.
